HYPOGLYCEMIA
Hypoglycaemia occurs when a child’s blood sugar levels go too low.

Low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia) present the greatest immediate danger to people with diabetes.

Children with diabetes will usually learn to sense when they are feeling fine, and to call for help when they are not.

However, people around them must be aware that they may suffer from low blood sugar and need your assistance to correct a SEVERE low blood sugar …or your patience until they can correct a MILD low blood sugar. On the average, diabetics suffer a severe reaction which requires the assistance of others only a couple of times a year. However, please do not get complacent, as for some children, moderate low blood sugars can and often do occur on a daily basis.

What can go wrong when sugar levels fall? What exactly is hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycaemia occurs when blood sugar levels drop to less than 70 mg/dL. Remember that Hypoglycemia can be life threatening but is preventable and easy to treat if detected early.

What are the symptoms of hypoglycemia?

The symptoms of low blood sugar levels can vary from child to child, and can also vary between consecutive episodes. You have to train your child to recognise these symptoms by asking him how he feels when he feels low, and giving him choices and descriptive examples. Kids sometimes describe themselves as a favourite toy running on a low battery.
