HYPERGLYCEMIA
High blood sugar can occur any time the blood sugar rises above the optimum target range. This is caused when there is too much sugar, and - or not enough insulin, in the body.

The two main reasons for very high blood sugar levels in a child with diabetes are:

  • Food/Insulin Imbalance
  • Illness

When your child falls sick, his blood sugar level may become very unpredictable. It may increase to dangerously high levels or may crash down.

Sick Day Rules

When should you get alarmed?

Children do fall sick frequently, and you do not need to worry about every small infection your child catches! However, please take special care when your child is having an illness that can cause one, two or all of the following;

fever, vomiting, diarrheaFever

Vomiting

Diarrhea

My child is vomiting, and hasn’t eaten ! Should I stop her insulin?

NEVER stop insulin; your child cannot live without it. PLEASE TAKE THIS VERY SERIOUSLY.

What can happen during such an illness?

Your child’s blood sugar levels may go UP or crash DOWN.

The blood sugar may become more difficult to control, and very unpredictable.

Your child may develop ketosis or ketoacidosis.
