DIABETES AT SCHOOL

Children with diabetes need to manage their day down to the last minute…which means they have to be aware of their special needs all the time. Managing diabetes at school takes a lot of team effort and careful planning. Your child will have to have adults around him who are willing to take care of him at school, just the way you do at home.

Remember: Food intake, insulin dosage and physical activity should be balanced at all times in order to keep the blood glucose within the normal levels.

Older and more responsible children can slowly start to take control over their own diabetes management, but will still need monitoring and alert caretakers. Younger children will of course need specialized care and attention at all times while at school. Each child with diabetes will have his own diabetes management plan, which should be shared with his caretakers at school also. They should be informed about every small change in his insulin intake and dietary habits as well.

The Daily Routine

The daily routine should include:

  1. Monitoring of food intake, particularly carbohydrates.
  2. Tracking of physical activity, particularly any strenuous exercises.
  3. Insulin/ other medication dosages.
  4. Checking blood glucose several times during the day.

Find out from the school authorities:

- Are there any trained personnel who can manage your child’s routine and emergency diabetes care during the school day, during regular school?

- Will your child be taken care of during field trips and extra-curricular activities, as he should not be excluded from such activities because of his diabetes?

- Will his teachers be able to recognize the symptoms of low or high blood sugar levels and give him the appropriate medical attention in an emergency?

- Will he be able to take part in sports and other extra curricular activities?

- Where and when can he take his insulin shots, and check his blood glucose levels?

- How will other children react to having a child with diabetes in their midst.

- Will there be someone who can monitor your child’s meals while at school, and ensure that he balances his food intake with his insulin shots correctly?

- What can the school do to ensure that your child is not singled out in any negative way, and is given the same educational opportunities as his peers?
